Deutsche Post wants higher letter postage from January

Deutsche Post is once again increasing postage. It last went up almost three years ago, and now again at the turn of the year. The approval of the Federal Network Agency is still pending.
Sending a standard letter domestically will cost 95 cents from January, 10 cents more than before. This is what Deutsche Post suggests. The approval of the Federal Network Agency is still missing for its validity. The Bonn authorities had previously allowed the cost of sending letters to increase by around 10.5 percent overall. The postal service has now determined how it wants to use this scope to increase prices for the different types of shipments.
Deutsche Post is not allowed to set postage itself
The biggest increase is the postcard, which currently costs 70 cents and should be the same price as the standard letter, which weighs up to 20 grams, i.e. 95 cents. Other types of letters, such as compact letters weighing up to 50 grams, are also becoming more expensive; this type of mail will then cost 1.10 euros, 10 cents more than before. They will also have to pay more for parcels that consumers hand over to the DHL postal group. These prices can increase by an average of 7.2 percent. The Federal Network Agency is expected to release the postage in December.
Deutsche Post is not allowed to set the postage itself, but relies on the approval of the Federal Network Agency. There are disagreements between the Bonn logistics company and the regulatory authority; the postal service wanted to raise the prices even further. She justified this with higher costs and the significant decline in volumes – in the digital age, people are sending fewer and fewer letters. However, the Federal Network Agency stuck to its stance and recently set the scope for increases.
Old postage stamps will remain valid in the coming years, but they must be additionally franked. The postage applies for two years, i.e. for the years 2025 and 2026. The last postage increase to date was in 2022, when the price for sending a standard letter rose from 80 to 85 cents.
