Why pistachio cream is such a hit right now

A wholesaler from Baden-Württemberg is currently selling ten times as much pistachio cream. Six tons per week go to customers. The reason for this is a new food trend from Dubai.
No sweet is as trendy as Dubai chocolate. The treat filled with pistachio cream and crispy dough strands is currently in great demand, and not just in retail. Wholesalers are also struggling with high demand. Pistachio cream is in greater demand than ever, said Pascal Walch, managing director of the dessert wholesaler JM Posner. He currently sells six tons of the cream he produces in Spain every week.
“We have seen that there are more and more and have increased production accordingly,” reports the managing director of the company based in Straubenhardt near Pforzheim. Around two months ago, production was increased from 600 kilograms to 6 tons per week – tenfold. At the beginning the dealer was laughed at because of this. “And yet it’s not enough.” Given the current demand, ten tons per week could be sold, said Walch.
Purchasing restrictions against hoarding
Purchase limits were introduced so that customers did not hoard the cream. “You can’t buy more than four buckets online.” Sometimes he is offered higher prices for the cream over the phone. He won’t get involved in that, reports Walch.
The pistachios for the cream came from Sicily. The customers included bakeries, dessert manufacturers and also private customers, reports the managing director. Even before the Dubai chocolate trend, demand for pistachio cream had increased – the product was used, for example, to fill croissants. “We have generally sold significantly more this year than the year before.”
“As soon as it’s Dubai, people will buy it”
The pistachio cream is not only used for homemade Dubai chocolate. “Many people also make Dubai tiramisu, Dubai ice cream or Dubai cheesecake out of it, there are many variations.” Everything sells. “As soon as Dubai comes along, people will buy it.” And he doesn’t mean that in a derogatory way. “When it’s Dubai, people know what to expect and try it. It’s similar to other flavors.”
Dubai chocolate owes its rise to Instagram and Tiktok, where it is a big topic. It is now also sold in Lindt boutique stores nationwide. Since then, the chocolate has caused meter-long queues and resales on the Internet for hundreds of euros. A bar costs around 15 euros in the store.
The chocolate originally comes from the Fix Dessert Chocolatier company, which has been selling it in Dubai since 2021. In Dubai the chocolate costs the equivalent of around 16.60 euros. According to the Berlin Consumer Center, the most expensive ingredient in chocolate is the pistachio cream. “Consumers should take a close look at how much pistachio there really is in the product.”
