Berlin already wants to abolish the 29-euro ticket

After just a few months, the 29 euro ticket is history again. It is probably falling victim to the black-red coalition’s austerity measures.

The 29-euro monthly ticket for local public transport in Berlin is to be abolished next year. Black-red wants to save the costs of up to 300 million euros annually for the so-called Berlin subscription in the 2025 budget, as the German Press Agency learned from coalition circles. The “Tagesspiegel” had previously reported.

The current 29-euro ticket was only introduced in July 2024 in the form of an annual subscription and is in competition with the Deutschlandticket, with which passengers can currently use local public transport nationwide for 49 euros. The extra offer for public Berlin city transport made it into the Berlin coalition agreement, primarily at the request of the SPD. The CDU had also promoted inexpensive mobility.

It was initially unclear when exactly the 29 euro ticket would be abolished. Recently, in the course of discussions about billions in savings in the state budget, there was also talk of increasing the price to 39 euros.

Even before its introduction, the Berlin ticket had come under criticism, for example from Bavaria or from Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing. “There seems to be enough money in the till,” the former FDP politician said in April. Local transport not only needs low prices, but also a good offer.
