There’s not much left to see of the Tesla protest camp in the forest: the tree houses have been destroyed and the remains of the camp are being disposed of. But the protest by environmental activists should continue.
The police have continued to dismantle the cleared protest camp of Tesla opponents in the forest in Grünheide near Berlin. The tree houses were brought down and the remains of the camp will be disposed of in the coming days, as the Brandenburg police headquarters announced. Despite the dissolution of the camp, environmental initiatives announced that they would continue to protest against Elon Musk’s only European Tesla factory.
On Wednesday, the police completed the days-long evacuation of the protest camp near the Tesla car factory. Police specialists pulled environmental activists out of the trees. According to the police, they also came from federal states outside of Berlin and Brandenburg as well as from France and Austria.
Police registered 31 crimes
According to the authorities, 18 people were temporarily taken into custody. Despite the requirements and the dissolution of the meeting, they illegally stayed in the tree houses and treetops. According to the police, 31 crimes have been committed in the past three days.
The reason for the police operation was a search for explosives initiated by the municipality of Grünheide. A police spokeswoman said no dangerous ammunition was found in the ground in the area where tree houses were dismantled.
Environmental alliance wants to demonstrate on Saturday
The “Turn off the tap from Tesla” alliance criticized the fact that the argument of clearing out explosive ordnance was a pretext used by the state of Brandenburg and the police to break up the registered meeting. This is also demonstrated by the use of heavy equipment on the site. On Saturday, Tesla opponents want to demonstrate during a “walk in the forest”.
Police Chief: 268 strenuous days of operation
For almost nine months, environmental activists had occupied the forest in protest against the Tesla car factory and the planned expansion of the area. Brandenburg’s police chief Oliver Stepien said: “The 268 strenuous days of operations in relation to the protest camp in Grünheide demanded a lot from the emergency services. The Brandenburg police always protected freedom of assembly through assembly-friendly actions as required by the highest court.” However, the police acted consistently when borders were crossed.
