The Government regulated the Single Paper Ballot

The initiative had been approved by Congress and promulgated by the Executive Branch. It will be implemented for the first time in next year’s legislative elections.

The Government regulated through Official Gazette Law No. 27,781 that establishes the use of Single Paper Ballot (BUP) as a voting system for all electoral processes at the national level. The changes in the National Electoral Code will come into force for the 2025 elections.

The initiative approved by Congress modifies various articles of Law No. 19,945, contemplating key aspects such as registration and officialization of candidates, the design and content of the Single Ballot and the rules for its implementation and use in primary, general and Mercosur Parliament elections.

“The Regulations of articles 62 bis and 62 ter of Chapter IV of Title III of the NATIONAL ELECTORAL CODE – Law No. 19,945 (to by Decree No. 2135/83) are approved and its amendments and articles 38 and 38 bis of Chapter V of Title II of the Law on the Democratization of Political RepresentationTransparency and Electoral Equity No. 26,571 and its amendments,” the Government reported.

How will the single paper ballot?

Unlike the traditional system, the single paper ballot will include all candidates and matches in the same document. Upon entering the dark roomthe voters You will be able to choose between two options:

With this new mechanism, the Government seeks to solve two common problems: the theft or concealment of ballots and the abuse of “rubber stamps”that is, parties without representation that only seek access to state funds.

Elections 2025: when is a vote valid or invalid?

According to the decree 915/2024one vote will be valid Yeah:

  • It uses a single official ballot.
  • The marks in the boxes are clear and you choose one electoral option by category.
  • If no option is checked, it will be considered a blank vote.

On the other hand, a vote will be null in the following cases:

  • Use of a unofficial ballot.
  • Mark more than one political group for the same category.
  • Breaks or inscriptions that prevent identification of the choice.
