In tragic cases and circumstances that had more twists and turns than Rust’s own script, both Baldwin and Rust’s gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez-Reedstill imprisoned, were charged with involuntary manslaughter.
In the case of Baldwin, initial 2023 charges dismissed on suspicion of incompetence by local prosecutor Mary Carmack-Altwies. The case was refiled in early 2024 when Morrissey and his then-deputy special counsel took control of the matter.
Baldwin has always insisted that he did not pull the trigger and that the gun discharged itself.so he could face up to 18 months in state prison if convicted. The FBI, an independent analysis and the man who made the gun disagreed with Baldwin’s claim.
Now, even as a finally finished Rust film made its debut at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival last week, Baldwin still faces nearly a dozen civil lawsuits over the Rust shooting and Hutchins’ death.
