Tax investigators search Adidas headquarters – customs dispute

Customs and the tax office searched the Adidas headquarters in Herzogenaurach. It’s about customs and tax regulations when importing products.

Adidas says it is having trouble with customs and the tax office. The world’s second-largest sporting goods company confirmed a report by “Manager Magazin” on Tuesday evening that there had been a search on Tuesday at the company’s headquarters in Herzogenaurach and other locations. A spokeswoman confirmed that it was about “compliance with customs and tax regulations when importing products into Germany.” According to the report, Bavarian tax investigators and customs officials were guests in Herzogenaurach, the factory in Scheinfeld, Franconia, and the logistics center in Rieste near Osnabrück.

The dispute has been simmering for years. The period from October 2019 to August 2024 is affected, the company explained. “Adidas is cooperating with the authorities and providing the necessary documents and information.” These are questions that have arisen “also as a result of different interpretations of German and European law”. In any case, major financial consequences are not to be expected. Apparently Adidas has already made provisions.

Adidas hardly produces any goods in Germany. Most shoes and textiles are manufactured by contractors in Asian countries such as China, Vietnam and Bangladesh.
