Germany tourism achieves record despite economic downturn

The economy is in crisis, but people in Germany are happy to spend money on vacation. A new record was recorded in the number of overnight stays.

Despite the economic crisis, tourism in Germany is growing at a record level and is leaving the Corona low behind. In October, hotels, inns, campsites and other accommodation providers recorded 45.5 million overnight stays, which was 2.5 percent more than a year earlier, as the Federal Statistical Office announced.

The number of overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 1.1 percent to 7.0 million, less sharply than that of domestic tourists, who accounted for the vast majority of overnight stays at 38.5 million (plus 2.7 percent).

Record overnight stays in the first ten months

In the period from January to October, tourism in Germany achieved a record with a good 433 million overnight stays: The number was 1.6 percent higher than in the same period last year and just above the previous high for the first ten months of a year, which was before Corona pandemic in 2019 with 432.3 million overnight stays.

Tourism in Germany had already recorded growth in the first three quarters, and there was a record overnight stay in the holiday month of August. Many people in Germany are holding on to their money after the wave of inflation, but German citizens are traditionally big spenders when they go on vacation. Only larger companies with at least ten overnight accommodations are taken into account in the statistics.
