Bus and train operators: Reliant on Syrian employees

The personnel situation at many transport companies is already extremely tense. A departure of Syrian employees would make the situation there significantly more difficult.
From the perspective of the transport industry, a departure of Syrian employees from Germany would make it significantly more difficult for buses and trains to operate stably. “We cannot do without them in many places,” said the President of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), Ingo Wortmann, to the German Press Agency upon request.
Around 2,000 Syrian colleagues work in local public transport nationwide in driving services alone, he added. If they returned, it would further exacerbate the existing personnel shortages in the industry.
Wortmann criticized calls, for example from Union faction deputy Jens Spahn, for immediate repatriations of Syrians after the fall of the Assad regime as political activism. “We are damaging Germany as a business location if people who want to work here cannot stay with us.”
