Many people have time off between the years – but according to a survey, not everyone actually switches off from work. This is also a generational question.
According to a survey, half of the working people who are on vacation around the Christmas holidays and New Year this year can be reached for work during this time. In the survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, around three quarters said they had time off at the end of the year. According to their own information, 50 percent of them remain available to colleagues, superiors and customers even on vacation days.
According to the survey, many employees prefer written communication. They can be reached via messaging services such as SMS and WhatsApp (48 percent) or by email (45 percent). Four out of ten respondents also take calls – but video calls are only an option for 15 percent.
30 to 49 year olds are the least likely to switch off
The youngest working people in particular make sure to switch off completely between the years. In the 16 to 29 age group, only a third can be reached on Christmas vacation. The 30 to 49 year olds are the most likely to be reached for business purposes (58 percent).
Accessibility during Christmas vacation was much more widespread before the corona pandemic. In 2019, 71 percent said in the Bitkom survey that they were available for professional concerns despite being on vacation. The proportion fell during the corona pandemic and is now around half for the fourth year in a row.
