The Munich city council is complying with a central but controversial request from the organizers VDA. This makes three more editions in the city much more likely.

The Munich city council is clearing the way for a continuation of the IAA Mobility motor show in Munich in 2027, 2029 and 2031. The majority of the committee is in favor of allowing the controversial “Open Spaces” – exhibition areas in prominent places in the city center – also in to make the future available and to speak out in principle in favor of the three further editions. These exhibition areas are considered a central part of the Munich concept.

The inner-city areas have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to previous editions of the IAA Mobility in Munich, but have also come under criticism. Opponents argue, among other things, with the burden on residents, but also with a sell-out of public space to corporations.

The continuation of the trade fair in Munich is not yet absolutely certain – but it is very likely. In principle, the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), as the organizer, has shown clear support for an extension beyond the already agreed event in 2025. The exhibition areas are considered an important prerequisite for this. Officially, the VDA calls it a central element.

Messe München also wants to continue the IAA and had recently advertised the Open Spaces: “Bringing the topic of mobility into the city was one of the cornerstones of the application,” Reinhard Pfeiffer, one of the two CEOs of the trade fair, recently emphasized.
