How much do cashiers at Aldi actually earn?

Cheap prices attract customers to Aldi. But does the cheap image also apply to employee salaries? No: The two Aldi companies pay surprisingly well.
At Aldi, special attention is paid to the price. One would think that wages are correspondingly low. But that’s not true. It’s possible that things are a little more hectic in Aldi branches than in other supermarkets: the speed at which cashiers at Aldi pull through the goods at the checkout is legendary. But the pay is comparatively good.
There are a few differences, first of all which Aldi company you are employed by. In 1961, the founder’s sons, Karl and Theo Albrecht, divided the family business (and the country) into two halves: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.
Aldi Nord pays standard salaries – and a surcharge
Today the following applies: At Aldi Süd the wages are slightly better than at Aldi Nord. This probably also explains why Aldi Süd is much more cautious about its wages – and why Aldi Nord is much more reserved. However, Aldi Nord must be given credit for accepting the respective regional collective agreements for retail and paying according to the tariffs. In addition, you pay “an Aldi allowance that is above the standard rate”, depending on the number of hours and length of employment. They wanted the exact height star but did not mention it when asked.
Aldi Nord has made it a point to pay an hourly wage of at least 14 euros since June 1, 2022. This probably particularly affects cashiers and stock clerks – the employees who earn the least in supermarkets. With a typical weekly working time of 37.5 hours, this corresponds to a basic monthly wage of 2,275 euros. There would also be holiday and Christmas bonuses.
Aldi Süd pays significantly more
In the south of Germany, the cost of living and wages are slightly higher. And that also applies to Aldi Süd. Instead of 14 euros, Aldi Süd pays its employees at least 15 euros. This hourly wage is for cashiers and clearing away goods.
Depending on their job and experience, cashiers earn up to 19.59 euros an hour. At 37.5 hours, this corresponds to a monthly salary for cashiers of around 2,440 to 3,180 euros. In addition, Aldi Süd also offers holiday and Christmas bonuses, as well as regional surcharges under certain circumstances.
Trained salespeople are slightly higher in the supermarket hierarchy. For sellers there are also good figures on average earnings in Germany – from . They estimate the salary in large retail companies to be 2,590 euros (converted to a 37.5-hour week).
Aldi Süd pays a basic wage of 2,660 to 3,460 euros per month – significantly more. Like Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd unfortunately also kept a low profile on questions star according to the amount of Christmas and holiday bonuses.
Trainees do not receive a minimum wage
Those who are still learning receive significantly less salary: apprentices in sales training pay 1,250 euros per month in the first year, 1,350 euros in the second year, and 1,500 euros in the third year. Here you can see the difference to Aldi Nord again: According to current advertisements, trainees there receive a salary of 1,160 euros in the first year – and 1,430 euros in the third. Both Aldi companies pay a little more for other training courses.
All salaries in this article are gross wages, so social security contributions and taxes are also deducted. And we’ve assumed full-time jobs so far. But part-time jobs are very common in retail. And two-thirds of all retail employees are women – and many of them are burdened with child care, which is why they often work part-time. And if you look through the job advertisements from Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, you will notice that there are a lot of part-time jobs advertised there.
However, for a 20-hour week, the starting basic wage for cashiers at Aldi Süd is also 1,300 euros per month.
