The Kicillof government warned that the elimination of the PAIS Tax will affect local tourism with a direct impact on the summer season

Looking ahead to the summer season, a minister of the Government of the Province of Buenos Aires expressed his concern about the elimination of the COUNTRY Tax and the impact on the local tourism industry. This is Augusto Costa, the Buenos Aires Minister of Production, who highlighted that the measure favors outbound tourism.

“The national government seems to be promoting tourism abroad, instead of generating favorable conditions for domestic tourism. The elimination of the PAIS Tax, applied to card expenses abroad, negatively impacts domestic tourism, making competitiveness difficult. of local destinations versus international destinations,” said Costa.

It should be remembered that the Government announced that the PAIS Tax, which applies a 30% surcharge on card consumption in dollars, will be eliminated as of December 24, 2024. However, although this tax will disappear, a similar 30% surcharge will remain, but in the form of a perception destined for Personal Profits and Assets.

This week, in the press conferences led by the Minister of Government, Carlos Bianco, along with other officials, Augusto Costa presented data that shows a notable drop in the tourism sector during 2024. According to estimates based on the INDEC Hotel Occupancy Survey, in the first nine months of the year there was a 15% decrease in the number of travelers and a 19% drop in occupied nights in hotel accommodations.

The Minister of Production highlighted that these figures reflect the negative impact of national policies, that altered consumption patterns in the tourism sector. “The formal hotel accommodation sector was the most affected, while other modalities of non-formal accommodation experienced growth”Costa explained.
