Disney+: synopsis of “A Complete Stranger”
In this biopic Edward Norton personifies Pete Seeger, the legendary folk musician. It is set between 1961 and 1965, and the plot follows the rise of Bob Dylan, played by Timothée Chalamet from his arrival in New York as an unknown musician to becoming an iconic figure of the genre. At first, Seeger is a kind of mentor to him.
The climax of the film and the story comes when Bob Dylan makes the decision to use electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, an act that challenged the traditions that Pete Seeger and his musical circle defended at the time. According to Norton, director James Mangold managed to avoid the clichés of heroes and villains, presenting two characters with different, but equally valid, integrity. Seeger defended the purity of folk, while Dylan sought to transcend the barriers of a genre he perceived as restrictive.
