Association calls for reliable housing policy

Housing construction in Germany is weakening and the home ownership rate is falling. Long-term planning should help against this, among other things.

The Federal Association of German Building Materials Trade (BDB) is calling on the future federal government to be reliable in housing construction policy. This is a central prerequisite for people to be willing to build, emphasizes the association, which is presenting a study by the Pestel Institute on the subject of home ownership at the construction trade fair in Munich on Monday. “Anyone who goes into debt to the limit of what is possible doesn’t want any risk – no surprises due to additional climate protection requirements, for example,” says BDB President Katharina Metzger.

Uncertainty is poison for purchasing home ownership, says Matthias Günther, chief economist at the Pestel Institute. “People need a reliable housing policy from the new federal government for at least twenty years,” he says.

The background to the demand is, among other things, an ever-decreasing home ownership rate. In 2022 – more recent figures are not yet available – it was 43.6 percent, with a downward trend, as Günther says. A very low value compared to Europe.
