Germany tourism records record despite economic downturn

The economy is in crisis, but people in Germany like to spend money on travel. A record number of overnight stays was reached and values before the Corona crisis were exceeded.

Despite the economic downturn, tourism in Germany is recording record numbers and is leaving the Corona low behind. In November, hotels, inns, campsites and other accommodation providers recorded 32.3 million overnight stays. That is 4.8 percent more than a year earlier, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.

More overnight stays than before Corona

From January to November, tourism in Germany achieved a record of 465.3 million overnight stays: the number was 1.8 percent higher than in the same period last year and slightly above the previous high for the first eleven months of a year from the pre-Corona year 2019.

In November, the number of overnight stays by domestic guests rose by 4.9 percent to 26.6 million. There was also a strong increase in foreign visitors, rising 4.2 percent to 5.7 million. “The fact that the number of overnight stays increased in November despite unstable weather and the Christmas holidays is an absolutely positive sign,” said Norbert Kunz, managing director of the German Tourism Association (DTV).

Tourism in Germany had already recorded growth in the first three quarters, and there was a record overnight stay in the holiday month of August. Many people in Germany are holding on to their money after the wave of inflation, but German citizens are traditionally big spenders when they go on vacation. Only larger companies with at least ten overnight accommodations are taken into account in the statistics.
