As the movie progresses, The changes to her character, Sue, required many prosthetics for the final “body horror.” The process of using them took its toll on him, as he recalls on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “At the end, when they’re filming my skirt in the opening credits, and it’s like there are palm trees everywhere and they have all these long lenses from below, that’s just because my face was so fucked up,” she said. “They couldn’t film my face anymore”.

The actress went from filming The Substance directly to the set of the surreal drama Yorgos Lanthimos Kinds Of Kindnesswhich required him to play four different characters. Fortunately, the acne he had from wearing the prosthetics was useful for the interpretation of one of his roles.
“So, you know the character who has all that acne? “It was just my acne from the prostheses.”Qualley said. “And I thought, ‘Oh, this is perfect. I’m playing all these different characters. For one of them, we’ll use all my crazy prosthetic acne.’ “It probably took me a year to physically recover from all that.”
