Ifo: Economists in America and Europe fear the Trump effect

Donald Trump’s start to his second term in office is triggering fears in many countries. Economists and business experts are no exception.

Among economists and business experts worldwide, fears about US President Donald Trump’s second term in office are greatest in Europe and North America. The economic experts surveyed by the Ifo Institute and the Swiss Institute for Economic Policy expect negative consequences for the economy, international trade policy and climate policy in the USA and Canada as well as in Western and Eastern Europe. However, among economists and business experts from other parts of the world, concerns about Trump are less pronounced, as the Munich Ifo Institute announced.

As part of their regular “Economic Experts Survey”, the economic researchers from the two institutes survey a four-digit number of economists and economic experts in over 100 countries four times a year. In the fourth quarter of 2024 there were 1,398 participants from 125 nations.

When it comes to economic growth, over 80 percent of respondents in Europe expect a negative Trump effect, and over 70 percent in North America. The majority of economists in South America, Africa and Asia, including China, do not expect any major economic damage.

Opinions are also noticeably divided when it comes to international security, although the concerns are less great: in North America, Europe and also Australia and New Zealand, a good half of economists fear negative consequences, a significantly larger proportion than in the rest of the world. 1,398 experts from 125 countries took part in the survey from December 4th to December 18th, 2024.
