Price breaker: Milka now costs a third more

Chocolate fans have to be very strong now: Milka is raising prices – and raising them considerably. In the future, a normal table from Edeka, Rewe or Aldi will be significantly more expensive.
In many places, customers have to dig deeper into their pockets for Milka chocolate. Large retail chains such as Aldi, Edeka, Kaufland, Rewe and Rossmann are offering the classic size bars for 1.99 euros this week instead of the previous 1.49 euros. This is shown by an evaluation by the price comparison portal Smhaggle. In the stores of some other retailers, the various varieties of the chocolate brand can still be purchased for the usual price until recently. Prices may vary regionally, for example due to discount campaigns.
Milka manufacturer Mondelez initially did not want to comment on this when asked. The price for a bar of Milka chocolate last rose in stores in the summer of 2024, by around 10 percent.
Price increase in the chocolate industry: Milka is following suit
The products of other chocolate manufacturers such as Ritter Sport had also become significantly more expensive in the past year. Lindt & Sprüngli had also increased prices and plans to do so again in 2025, as the company recently announced. The manufacturers justify this with poor harvests and the consequences of climate change. As a result, the price of cocoa rose to a record high at the beginning of 2024.
“Cocoa is in short supply on the world markets. This is driving prices up,” said WWF expert Kerstin Weber. Extreme weather events such as long periods of drought, heavy rain or floods led to lower yields, poorer quality or completely destroyed crops. In many places, the cocoa trees are also affected by diseases. Weber expects cocoa prices to remain high in 2025 and not fall back to their old levels.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, a chocolate bar was on average 14.6 percent more expensive in December 2024 than a year before. Prices had already risen in previous years.
