Electric share in the parcel industry is increasing

When the parcel companies DHL, Hermes and DPD deliver parcels, their vehicle usually still has a combustion engine. This is bad for the climate. But something is happening.

Germany’s parcel industry is using more and more electric transporters to deliver shipments in a climate-friendly manner. Upon request, DHL announced that it wanted to increase the number of DHL electric vans used for parcels by 4,600 to around 37,000 by the end of the year.

The competition is also relying more heavily on electric vehicles, but is well behind market leader DHL: Hermes says it currently has 1,200 electric vans in use in Germany, and DPD has 300 – these companies also want to purchase more electric vehicles for deliveries. The companies want to use the investments to improve their carbon footprint.

DHL currently has around 67,600 vans in use for parcel delivery in Germany, meaning the electric share is 48 percent. Hermes puts the Stromer share at 13 percent, and the trend is rising. At DPD it is only 3.5 percent, by the end of the year it should be 15 percent.
