Despite Nagelsmann’s whereabouts: Völler is only planning until 2026

Rudi Völler made Julian Nagelsmann national coach. The duo harmonizes and is successful. Will the sports director stay like Nagelsmann until 2028? Völler still has a clear answer.

Despite national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s contract extension until 2028, DFB sports director Rudi Völler is currently not thinking about staying beyond next year’s World Cup. “That’s not an issue. It stays as it is,” Völler told the German Press Agency at the DFB’s 125th birthday gala in Leipzig.

Völler took over the position from Oliver Bierhoff shortly after the early failure at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After Hansi Flick left his position as national coach in September 2023, the 64-year-old helped out as interim coach for an international match against France (2-1) and then brought Nagelsmann in as the new head coach of the national soccer team.

Völler extended before Nagelsmann until 2026

Last spring, Völler extended his contract as sports director, which actually only lasted until the 2024 home European Championships, until the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Shortly afterwards, Nagelsmann also extended his contract until the tournament next summer and has now even committed to the DFB until the 2028 European Championship.

Of course, there were rumors in Leipzig that Völler could still change his mind. However, as was announced at the ceremony, an extension with Völler, similar to Nagelsmann, was not a topic of discussion with the national coach. Nagelsmann himself had emphasized that the good contact with Völler as well as with DFB boss Bernd Neuendorf and managing director Andreas Rettig was crucial for his decision to extend his contract early on.
