Survey: Companies fear damage by Trump

“Customs” is one of Donald Trump’s favorite words. This is particularly evident in the past few weeks. With German companies, however, his presidency has been fueling fears for a long time.

Many companies in this country fear that Donald Trump’s US presidency will harm the German economy. This is shown by a representative survey by the ZEW economic research institute, which is available to the German Press Agency. Around three quarters of companies in industry and information management calculated with negative consequences, including 15 percentage points with very negative effects. Only about seven percent expect a positive effect on the German economy.

Industry is more skeptical

When it comes to the success of your own company or your own industry, the respondents are a little less concerned. In the information industry, 20 percent of the industry expects negative consequences for your own success, 26 percent of the companies. In the processing trade, these shares were sometimes significantly higher: 43 percent took care of their own success, almost half of the industry.

According to the head of the ZEW survey, Daniel Erdsiek, also depends on whether they deliver to the United States, according to the head of the ZEW survey. “For example, 55 percent of companies with US exports expect the Trump presidency to have a negative impact on their own success. For companies without US exports, this value is 34 percent,” he said.

Decisions have not yet been taken into account since taking office

The processing trade in particular includes companies that generate further processing and end products. Important industries are vehicle construction, the electrical industry, mechanical engineering as well as chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The information industry includes companies in the information and communication technology industry as well as media service providers.

Around 850 companies took part in the ZEW survey in December. Trump’s decisions after his inauguration on January 20 are not yet taken into account in the reviews.
