According to a survey, significantly more people than a few years ago plan to buy something for your loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Other numbers show that the day has no meaning for many.
Flowers, chocolates or rather jewelry? For gifts on Valentine’s Day on February 14th, people in Germany want to spend more money this year than a few years ago. This emerges from a survey by the IFH trade research institute on behalf of the German Handelsverband (HDE). Consumers therefore plan expenditure of 1.3 billion euros. In 2020, according to a survey carried out, it was only around one billion euros.
The plus is primarily due to the fact that more people now want to buy something for their loved ones on the occasion of the Valentine Day. Around 28 percent intended this, but in 2020 it was only almost 17 percent. At the end of January, the IFH asked 1,500 people between the ages of 18 and 69.
According to the survey, food and flowers are particularly popular. Gift items, decorative items as well as watches and jewelry are also in demand. According to HDE, no comparable survey was carried out between 2020 and 2025.
Survey: Valentine’s Day only important for 15 percent
“Valentine’s Day has become much better known for the past five years and has become more important for retail,” said HDE general manager Stefan Genth.
According to a recent survey by the YouGov, Valentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day is obviously not particularly important to many people in Germany. For 41 percent, it has no meaning at all, very or less for a further 40 percent. The day is very important for only 15 percent. Yougov asked 1,763 adults on February 6th.
