Hundreds of million euros in Bitcoin are probably at a landfill in Wales – and the owner does not come to you. Now there is a new glimmer of hope.
James Howells is actually a rich man. The problem: his fortune slumber somewhere, probably at a landfill in Wales – at least that’s how Howells suspects. For years he has been trying to get wealth that belongs to him again. Now he could possibly take a big step forward.
It is about a hard drive that Howells had thrown away from the big house plaster in August 2013. There were 8000 bitcoins on this. The cryptocurrency was not much worth it at the time, but of all people, of all people, made a veritable rally. In the meantime, Howells’ Bitcoin has a value of more than 750 million euros – if he only got it. His latest glimmer of hope: The landfill in Newport will soon be closed. Then Howells wants to buy them.
Around 750 million euros in Bitcoin on the trash
In the 2025/26 financial year, the city administration would like to close the dump. Howells sees his chance. “The decision of the city council is quite a surprise,” the BBC quotes. “I would be interested in buying the landfill as it is.” He had already spoken to various investors about the possibility that the purchase was “a big topic”.
However, the city should also play along. So far, their plans provide to seal the terrain and then build a solar park. And with the Newport City Council, James Howells has had no good experiences. The prevented Bitcoin millionaire and the third largest city of Wales have been in the clinch for years. The politicians do not want to allow him to look for his bitcoins at the landfill.
The city has been going across for years
Howells has already moved to court: the city should let him on the landfill or pay him compensation of almost 600 million euros. A court rejected the lawsuit in January. There is “no realistic view” to find the hard drive. Offers to share the assets in the event of success also went into nothing. There are about 1.4 million tons of garbage on the site. Howells wants to limit the area on which its hard drive is located to 100 million tons.
In addition, the Welsh has developed a detailed plan on how it wants to bring the valuable hard drive back to daylight. Among other things with robots and a specially compiled team. This includes a former head of the garbage dump.
