Closing shops, shops in the pedestrian zones are empty: Many inner cities in Germany experience difficult times. According to a study, there is still positive developments.
Restaurants, cafes and bars are becoming more important in the city centers in Germany. For 40 percent of passers -by, the gastronomic offers are a motive for the inner -city visit, as a new study by the Cologne trade research institute IFH shows. The proportion increased significantly, in 2022 it was 35 percent, in 2020 26 percent.
“The demand for gastronomy in city centers has grown, which applies particularly to younger people. This is also due to the fact that the desire for meetings and personal exchange is more pronounced today,” says IFH Managing Director Boris Hedde.
In the fall of last year, the researchers asked 68,451 people in 107 German cities for the study “Vitale inner Caps”. Overall, shopping is still the most common visiting motif (61 percent). When asked about the reasons for going to the city center, the participants of the survey were able to provide several information.
The people in Germany still see needs to make the city centers even more attractive. Many require measures against vacant shops and fallow land and to improve the infrastructure, such as an improved range of toilet.
