US President: Trump: Chip manufacturers should produce in the USA

US President Donald Trump has asked the chip industry to move more production to the United States. “Taiwan took the chip business away from us,” said Trump in the White House. “We want it back to the USA. And if you don’t bring it back, we won’t be very happy,” he warned.

The US chip manufacturers like Intel once laid the foundation of the industry. But above all the state -of -the -art chips are now mainly produced in Taiwan – even if they are being developed in the USA. Industry experts attribute the change to the fact that the authorities attracted the manufacturers with generous subsidies for several decades.

The great concern in the west is that the supply of smartphone chips would collapse, the Chinese government of Taiwan should scrap off.

Taiwan signals cooperation

According to his statements, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-Te promised a courtesy. The Taiwanese government is ready to build a resistant and diversified supply chain for semiconductors together with democratic partners such as the United States, he said to journalists.

Taipei will be closely exchanged with Washington so that the US government of Taiwan understands an indispensable role in strengthening the US leadership role in the high-tech industry, said Lai. TSMC, the chip giant of the democratically ruled island republic, did not comment on Trump’s statements when asked by DPA.

Trump does not like bidens chip subsidies

Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden had launched an almost $ 40 billion (EUR 38 billion) difficult subsidy program, which was to create incentives for the settlement of chipport in the United States. Europe followed up with similar plans. Trump criticized the project in the election campaign as a waste of money and signaled that he would rather put on tariffs instead.

“We had Intel, we had these great companies that were doing so well – and that was taken away and we want to go back this business,” said Trump. Intel has been trying to catch up with the Taiwanese market leader TSMC for years. Most recently, company boss Pat Gelsinger had to take his hat after the catch -up. In Europe, Intel put the construction of a new factory in Magdeburg on hold, for which state support was promised in billions of bills.
