Study: Young people work significantly more

A prejudice states that Generation Z shows little will. A study has now found the opposite.

The 20- to 24-year-olds in Germany work as much as it hasn’t been for a long time. Since 2015, the acquisition of this age group has increased by more than 6 percentage points to around 76 percent above average, the Nuremberg Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research said. The main reason for this is that students increasingly followed a part -time job.

In comparison: the employment participation of the 25- to 64-year-olds increased by almost 3 percentage points to almost 87 percent in the same period. From 1995 to 2015, on the other hand, the employment of the 20 to 24 year olds fell constantly.

Common clichés do not apply

“This finding contradicts common clichés about the lack of willingness to work for Generation Z,” the authors write in the study. In addition, young people did not change jobs more often today than before. The development of the desired working hours among the boys does not differ from the elder.

For the study, the experts had evaluated the statistics of the Federal Employment Agency, data from the microcensus and the population statistics of the Federal Statistical Office. The so -called generation Z includes those born from 1995 and later. In 2015, the first year of this generation moved into the age group of 20 to 24 year olds.

Students work more – part -time

The figures therefore show that from 2015 to 2023 both the full-time and part-time employment in this age group increased. However, part-time employment increased much more. Among students between the ages of 20 and 24, the employment rate between 2015 and 2023 increased by a good 19 percentage points to 56 percent, and almost 2 percentage points for non-students to almost 86 percent.

Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) announced with a view to the study: “In view of the demographic changes in our society, we are more dependent on the young generation than ever.” The fact that this is willing to tackle, earn recognition and respect instead of polemical debates about the generation Z.
