Employment stagnates at the end of the year






After the Corona deep, more and more jobs have emerged in Germany. That seems to be over for now.

At the end of the year, the number of employed people in Germany rose only slightly to 46.3 million people. The Federal Statistical Office attributes the increase of 156,000 people or 0.3 percent compared to the third quarter to the seasonal effect on the labor market, which is common at the end of the year. That is why adjusted there are no changes to the previous quarter and not for the comparison period in the previous year.

In the third quarter of 2024, the number of season -adjusted number of employees was for the first time since the beginning of 2021. The catch-up process after the job losses in the Corona crisis is therefore increasingly flattened.

In the final quarter of 2024 there were only growth in the service areas, while jobs have been eliminated in the areas of industry, construction and agriculture.

In addition, the trend towards employment subject to social security contributions continued. While the number of employees increased by 0.2 percent to 42.5 million in the year, the number of self -employed and their helping relatives decreased by 2.2 percent to 3.7 million.
