The drilling system ate through the ground for over 580 days until a depth of 10,910 meters was reached. China hopes for raw materials and scientific knowledge.
China has completed the work on his deepest borehole so far. As the state news agency Xinhua reports, the borehole “Shenditake 1” reaches a depth of 10,910 meters. It is located in the Tarim pool in the Taklamakan desert of the West Chinese region of Xinjiang.
The hole drilled under the leadership of the state oil company CNPC is therefore part of a scientific project that is not only looking for oil and gas deposits, but is also supposed to advance research into the earth’s history and geology of deep earth.
Several engineering breakthroughs had succeeded in the hole. So it is not just the deepest borehole of Asia. A depth of over 10,000 meters was reached as quickly as never before with a land hole.
The holes started on May 30, 2023 and lasted more than 580 days. Most of the time – around 300 days – was therefore spent on the last 910 meters. The borehole had reached rocks that are more than 500 million years old. For the project, CNPC developed the world’s first automated drilling system for depths of up to 12,000 meters.
