Heat pump balance: “Today I wouldn’t install any more”

Experience report
20 years of heat pump – a homeowner takes stock

Werner Breitling has been heating a heat pump for 20 years. When he built his house, the technology was still new. Which mistake he made and how he thinks about an installation today.

Werner Breitling* is what consumer research calls an “early adopter”. Someone who buys new technical products at an early stage. When he built his house 20 years ago, Breitling decided: I heating with heat pump.

“I thought ecologically at the time, wanted to be independent of fossil energies,” he says in an interview with that star. “Although I’m actually not a green one, not a convinced greener.”

In 2001 Breitling bought a property in a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Then he built the house in which he still lives today. He had a geothermal pump installed in his basement. A technology that was still new and unusual at the time.

“Today I would no longer install a heat pump”

“Here in the area there was only one company that installed heat pumps,” recalls Breitling. “In comparison to the prices today, I paid little in total. 28,000 euros with underfloor heating.”
