In Germany, more e-bikes have been sold for a long time than bikes without an engine. And they don’t end up on the scrap as quickly as industry expected.
In Germany there are much more electrically powered bicycles than previously assumed. According to the two-wheeler industry association (ZIM), the batteries and thus the entire e-bike keep for significantly longer than expected and are scraped later.
As a result, the existence of e-bikes in Germany has grown to 15.7 million pieces last year. That is a good three million bikes more than has been assumed in the update of earlier forecasts since 2014.
Including the bicycles without an engine, the stock in Germany has grown to around 89 million pieces. Nevertheless, between 4 and 5 million new vehicles have been added in recent years. The association wants to announce details of sales and production on Wednesday.
