Has Germany become the land of listless? A study has never been done as often as the regulations, as in the past year, found a study.
According to a study, the proverbial “service according to the regulations”, if employees do only the bare essentials in their job, has increased significantly in Germany last year. In contrast, emotional binding, loyalty and trust in the financial future of the employer had broken into, scientists from the Gallup Institute for the Gallup Engagement Index 2024.
The proportion of those who are emotionally tied to their employer had broken into a record low of nine percent – in 2023 it was 14 percent. Only half of the employees want to stay with the current employer for more than a year, only a little more than a third wanted to stay more than three years. According to the study, “service according to the regulations” is now 78 percent of employees. In 2023, this proportion was still 67 percent.
Billions of losses through “internal dismissals”
“This means that almost two million fewer employees were hand, heart and mind in the previous year,” the study said. Gallup assumes that the economic costs in the form of productivity loss will amount to a value between 113 billion and 135 billion euros by “internal terminations” – a little less than in the previous year.
“The prevailing weakly pronounced emotional bond contributes to the willingness to change, while the assessment of the labor market is increasingly decoupling from the economic situation,” said Marco Nink, one of the study authors. “Despite the numerous bad news of the past few months, employees in Germany still seem to be positively assess their opportunities on the labor market, which certainly also has to do with the fact that the lack of work and skilled workers can be felt every day.”
Data indicate deeply skepticism
Companies would have managed to reduce “internal termination” again by targeted measures – but they have not yet managed to arouse motivation. The goal must be to get to high emotional binding through a motivating leadership culture and thus to increase performance and competitiveness.
However, the current trend goes in the completely wrong direction: only 21 percent of the employees’ trust of their respective manager – a crash by 20 points compared to the previous year. In 2019 this proportion was still 49 percent. “The data indicate deeply skepticism and a feeling of alienation in large parts of the workforce.”
The commitment index has been created by Gallup annually since 2001. Between November 18 and December 20, 1,700 randomly selected employees aged 18 and over were interviewed by phone. According to Gallup, the results are representative of workers in Germany aged 18 and over.
