“Pokémon Go” changes the owner for several billion dollars
The hype about “Pokémon Go” is long gone. The smartphone variant is popular with which fans collect the famous pocket monsters, but still. And obviously very lucrative.
The popular smartphone game “Pokémon Go” gets a new owner in a billion dollar deal. The previous developer company Niantic sold most of its playing business for $ 3.5 billion. The buyer is the Games producer Scopely behind which the Saudi Arabian state fund is standing.
Developer team should remain
Niantic and Scopely emphasized in blog entries that “Pokémon Go” and other games such as “Pikmin Bloom” and “Monster Hunter Now” are to be developed by the same team. Among other things, Niantic wants to concentrate on artificial intelligence and its geodata platform and keeps two games completely developed in-house: “Ingress Prime” and “Peridot”.
“Pokémon Go” became a global hit at the start in summer 2016. In the game you can catch figures from the Pokémon games on the smartphone screen in a real environment. In the years after, Niantic did not succeed in repeating the success of “Pokémon Go” with other games. A hard core of die -hard fans still guarantees the company solid income.
“Pokémon Go” dominant under Niantic games
The sale for the first time is known for the first time. Scopely announced that “Pokémon Go” came to 20 million players at least once a week. Around half play every day. The daily usage period is on average at 40 minutes.
The numbers also demonstrate how dominant “Pokémon Go” is in the Niantic game business: all games together attract 30 million users per month. Last year the games brought more than one billion dollars.
The deal is still subject to approval by authorities and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Games such as “Monopoly Go!”, “Star Trek Fleet Command” and “Marvel Strike Force” are already coming from Scopely. A few weeks ago, the Bloomberg financial service reported on the upcoming sale of the Niantic games and also called the price of $ 3.5 billion.
