IFW Kiel expects 2026 with stronger economic growth

The scientists expect a noticeable increase in gross domestic product in the coming year. The institute thus significantly raises its forecast.

The Institute for the World Economy (IFW) in Kiel will expect the German economy to grow stronger next year. This emerges from the spring forecast published on Thursday. In 2026, scientists expect an increase in gross domestic product (GDP) by 1.5 percent compared to the previous year (winter forecast: 0.9 percent). The GDP measures the value of the inland power.

“The planned defense spending can structurally give a thrust if they are issued correctly,” said the President of the IFW Kiel, Moritz Schularick. German and European companies have to benefit the money.

The institute also expects an inflation to be two percent, a decreasing unemployment rate to 5.9 percent (acceptance of 2025: 6.2 percent) and increasing government debt to 65.4 percent in relation to GDP (so far: 63.3 percent). In the forecast, the scientists assume that the old Bundestag decides the special fund of 500 billion euros and the reform of the debt brake.

This year the IFW Kiel unchanged with a stagnation of the German economy. Already in the winter prognosis presented in December, the scientists assumed this scenario.
