Winemakers are facing the consequences of climate change. The German Wine Institute is looking at more robust grape varieties.

In view of climate change, winegrowers in German growing areas are increasingly relying on new, more robust grape varieties. As the German Wine Institute (DWI) announced, mushroom -resistant grape varieties (PIWIS) were grown on around 3,500 hectares in 2024 – ten percent more space than in the previous year. They make 3.5 percent on the entire vineyard area. Another trend is evident in the red wine: in the overall declining segment, Mediterranean varieties also play a growing role in this country.

The most important Piwi variety in German growing areas is Souvignier Gris. Here the acreage grew to around 600 hectares by 208 last year. In the conventional white grape varieties, the cultivation areas at the Chardonnay Burgundy varieties (plus 138 hectares), Pinot Blanc (plus 44 hectares) and Grauburgunder (plus 32 hectares) and the Sauvignon Blanc (plus 52 hectares).

DWI: Winemakers adapt to the challenges of climate change

In total, 2024 white wine rabbits made up for a little more than two thirds of the total ferret area of ​​almost 103,300 hectares from the end of February after the Federal Statistical Statistics of the Statistical Office of the end of February.

According to DWI, the well -known worries (plus 30 hectares) and Cabernet Sauvignon (plus 14 hectares), but also the new, robust red wine varieties Pinotin (plus 10 hectar) and cabernet cortis (plus 9 hectares) added under the red wine grape varieties. German winegrowers increasingly adapted to the challenges of climate change, said DWI managing director Monika Reule.

The latest figures for 2023 are available for ecologically cultivated vineyards, as the DWI announced with reference to a survey by the Information Society Agricultural Market. According to this, 15,300 hectares came together, 1,500 more than 2022.
