There is no conviction and cool: this is Switzerland’s reaction to the US tariffs, at least 31 percent on products from the Alpine country.
For the time being, Switzerland waives countermeasures against the announced US tariffs. This is announced by the government in Bern. Switzerland is particularly affected compared to its trading partners: 31 percent announced US President Donald Trump.
“There is no increase in trading policy tensions in the interests of Switzerland,” said the government. Countermeasures against the US-Zoller increase would be associated with costs for the Swiss economy, especially by the increase in imports from the United States. The government points out that Switzerland has abolished all industrial tariffs in 2024 and 99 percent of all goods from the USA can be imported to Switzerland. The commercial surplus is mainly due to the exports of chemical-pharmaceutical industry and gold trade.
Unlike the EU Commission, the government had previously reacted unexpectedly to the announcement: Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter wrote on the platform X.
Ed McMullen, the entrepreneur and Trump confidant, who was an ambassador in Bern in Trump’s first term in office, praises that. “I think Federal President Keller-Sutter hit the right tone,” he told the “World Week”. As soon as Switzerland has articulated the importance of the trading partnership with the USA, trade will continue to grow.
