Customers feel it when shopping: Some foods are significantly more expensive than a year ago. Not only vegetables are affected. The price increases are up to 35 percent.

The inflation of food attracts. In March, people in Germany had to pay an average of 3.0 percent more than a year ago, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. With some products, the prices in supermarkets and discounters are even significantly higher.

An evaluation of the authority shows that peppers cost 34.5 percent more than twelve months earlier in March this year. The situation on the market is tense according to the Agrarmarkt Information Society (AMI). In Spain, the recent capers of weather would have led to crop failures. In addition, the high moisture affects the condition of the pods. The German wholesale market prices for red peppers were more than 3.50 euros per kilo in early April and thus above average of the past few years.

Strong price increases can also be observed in cucumbers (+23.7 percent) and tomatoes (+19.9). Strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and the like (+23.7) are particularly affected for fruit. According to Ami, raspberries recently only had a short offer. The cool weather in the Mediterranean had influenced the season and repeatedly delayed the maturity.

Juices more expensive, sugar cheaper than a year ago

Consumers had to dig significantly lower than a year ago when shopping also had to go for table chocolate (+25.1 percent), butter (+23.3) and for orange or other fruit juices (+18.7). The price of butter had risen to a record high in autumn, and it dropped again in February.

However, some foods were much cheaper than in March 2024. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the price of sugar was 26.1 percent lower. Among other things were also cheaper onions, garlic and the like (minus 12.7) and carrots (-10.8).

Overall, life in Germany in March no longer made itself as strong as in the previous months. Consumer prices in this country were 2.2 percent above the level of the previous year. In recent years, the inflation had often been significantly higher. This was mainly driven by the increased food prices.
