Piracy on the world’s oceans has increased

Pirates attack ships more often on the world’s oceans or try – at least 45 times this year. An area is particularly affected.

Piracy on the world’s oceans has increased. 45 attacks and tried attacks counted the international shipping office (IMB) based in London between January and March. In the same period last year, there were 33 cases in the first quarter of 2023. The IMB is an organization of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) from Paris.

According to the report, the pirates entered 37 ships, hijacked four and attempted attacks on four more. “The threat to the safety of the crews remains high,” says the ICC’s message.

It is striking that the threat has increased particularly on the street of Singapore, a bottleneck between Singapore and Indonesia. The shipping office had 27 attacks and tried attacks. In the previous year, according to updated information, it was seven. The report does not show why the incidents have increased on the route.

Ship under German flag affected

According to the statistics, a ship under German flag was affected by piracy. The crew of the container ship “Callao Express” noticed in March near Ecuador, two small, uncomfortable boats that quickly approached the merchant ship.

The ship alerted the authorities, increased the speed and initiated evasive maneuvers, whereupon the two boats dated the persecution.
