For Easter, consumers are exposed to tangible price increases. Of all things, for products that are indispensable for many at the festival.

Easter with classic accessories such as colorful colored eggs or chocolate buns will be an expensive affair this year. After already violent increases in the past four years, consumer prices for many relevant products have currently been significantly increased again, as evaluations of the Federal Statistical Office show.

In the short term, eggs that were only 2.5 percent more expensive in March than a year earlier. You have previously had a price increase of 38.5 percent in the period between 2020 and 2024.

Chocolate products have become 39.9 percent more expensive during this period, i.e. well above average compared to all foods (33.2 percent) or the general consumer prices (19.3 percent), which represent all goods and daily needs, including energy and rents. In the spring of 2025, chocolates in the shops were another 16.7 percent more expensive than a year earlier.

The price increases do not stop at homemade Easter classics: almost all main ingredients for the traditional Easter lamb are more expensive than last year. Hobby bakers sometimes have to dig deeper into their pockets: butter is more expensive than before Easter 2024. In March, their price was 23.3 percent above the same month. In autumn he rose to a record high, most recently he sank again.

Sugar is cheaper than a year ago

Sugar, on the other hand, is significantly cheaper, the price of which, according to the Federal Statistical Office, was 26.1 percent below the value of the previous year. The prices for eggs (plus 2.5 percent) and flour (plus 0.4 percent) developed less extremely.

The bottom line is that baking an Easter lamb this year is a bit more expensive than at the last Easter, because – with a view to the recipe – the increase in butter is more important than the decline in sugar. But: Compared to many other cakes, the Easter lamb is still quite cheap.
