Briefly at “Gender Equality Forum” in Paris

The forum is organized by “UN Women” together with France and Mexico as well as UN organizations, the private sector and NGOs. According to the Federal Chancellery, Austria supports education and medical care for women and girls in Syria and Lebanon with two million euros.

Two million euros for education

“The basic value of equality between men and women is non-negotiable,” emphasized Kurz in the run-up to the summit. “We must therefore fight for equality between men and women worldwide and we must not allow dangerous ideas that contradict this to be imported into Europe. I come from a generation where equality between men and women is a matter of course”, so the Chancellor continues. Austria will therefore support the education of women and girls in Syria and Lebanon with two million euros.

According to the Federal Chancellery, Austria supports the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA from the Foreign Disaster Fund (AKF) with one million euros for medical care and emergency aid in cases of violence. The United Nations Unit for Equality, “UN Women”, and the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF are also supported with one million euros for the education of women and girls in Lebanon. Other participants in the Generation Equality Forum include former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Melinda Gates, the wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

International appearance

During the event, which lasts several days, violence against women will also be discussed. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to send a video message to the participants at the opening. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are expected for the meeting in the French capital, which will last until Friday.
