Did Picasso paint Hitler? They investigate a work of the Spanish artist

It is an almost monstrous, ridiculed caricature of Hitler, in which he is seen with objects and elements prohibited by the Nazi regime, such as makeup or a pipe, since the German dictator was a true opponent of tobacco.

The finding was presented during an international conference at the Castle of the Counts Brancaleoni, in Italy, as part of a meeting on memory, art Y Nazism, reported the newspaper La Repubblica.

What was estimated is that the work would be attributable to Picasso, according to the study of certain elements, such as the one identified by the forensic calligrapher Stefano Fortunati after analyzing the word “schweigen” (in its translation into Spanish, “shut up”) .

It is that, for Fortunati, the “s” coincides with the painter’s writing style.

Likewise, the work is considered a tribute by Picasso to his friend Klee since the painting presents aesthetic characteristics of both artists, and in this sense it would be a hybrid work. The artists were friends and met at least twice.

In 1914, the Swiss-born artist made a work to pay homage to Picasso and it is believed that the painter from Malaga wanted to repay the gesture with this painting, which currently belongs to a private collection of an Italian family whose ancestor worked in a train station, where it is believed that it could be found.

According to the first studies that have been carried out on the pigments at the University of Ascoli Piceno (central Italy), the work that was entitled “The eye of the serpent” -due to the rattlesnake that marks the contour of the dictator’s face- It can be placed between 1935 and 1937.

“Obviously there are no such assumptions at this time that would lead us to attribute the work with certainty to Picasso, certainly the painting and its study will have to be investigated further,” explained international art expert Annalisa Di Maria, among the specialists at the in front of this finding. If the authorship of the work is verified, it will mean an exceptional discovery “an example of the great opposition and the struggle of Picasso against Hitler”.

For the specialist, as quoted by the newspaper La Vanguardia, “the work deserves to be known, studied again and seen by other experts to appreciate its importance. It undoubtedly represents one of the most important works of the 20th century as a critic of Nazism.

A testimony of dissidence, bearer of the truth of those horrors committed by one of the bloodiest dictators in history. “Only a genius and a master of expressionism with a deep sense of poignant irony could have created such a painting,” Di Maria said.
