Rainer Schaller: search stopped after plane crash

The search for the crash of Rainer Schaller’s private plane has been discontinued. Authorities have not found any further clues.

McFit founder Rainer Schaller’s (53) private plane crashed off the coast of Costa Rica on October 21. Also on board were his partner, their two children, another German and the pilot. About a week and a half after the crash, authorities in Costa Rica announced that the search for the plane and missing persons had been halted. Four of the six people who were on board are still missing.

No further evidence had been discovered, Costa Rican Deputy Minister of Public Safety Martín Arias announced on Tuesday (November 1, local time). According to the authorities, relatives of the victims visited the scene of the accident on Tuesday. After the “emotional moment,” Public Safety Minister Jorge Torres Carrillo ended the search in the presence of family members who thanked the Costa Rican government for their cooperation, according to a social media post .

Radio contact broken

The private Piaggio P.180 plane was on its way from Mexico to Limón province airport on Friday (October 21), the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Safety said after initial reports of the crash. At 6 p.m. local time (Saturday, 2 a.m. Central European Summer Time), radio contact with the machine was lost.

Rainer Schaller founded McFit GmbH in 1996 and opened the first fitness studio in Würzburg in 1997. He was also active as the organizer of the Love Parade.
