Native Americans call for a boycott of James Cameron’s film

The Amerindian activist and artist Yue Begay shared a statement calling for a boycott of Cameron’s film.

“Don’t watch Avatar: The Waterway. Join Native Americans and other indigenous groups around the world in boycotting this horrible and racist movie,” he tweeted alongside his open letter to the public. “Our cultures were misappropriated to satisfy some man’s savior complex. No more ‘blueface’! The Lakota people are powerful!”

Begay’s criticisms are based on controversial statements by Cameron in 2009, where he spoke about the Lakota Sioux tribe. “I felt like I had gone back 130 years in time seeing what the Lakota Sioux might have been saying, at a time when they were being pushed around and killed, being asked to move and being given some kind of compensation.” confessed in an interview for The Guardian.
