Tatjana Patitz is dead: how the German became a supermodel

Along with Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz was one of the most sought-after supermodels of the 80s and 90s. She has now passed away at the age of just 56. Patitz suffered from breast cancer, as confirmed by her agent. Nothing was publicly known about her illness. Last year, the native of Hamburg appeared several times at performances in Germany – sometimes accompanied by her 18-year-old son Jonah. The boy was from her marriage to American businessman Jason Johnson, which ended in divorce in 2009.

Patitz owed her breakthrough as a model to German photographer Peter Lindbergh, who photographed her on Malibu Beach in 1988 with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington. It was the birth of the supermodel. “She was much less visible than her colleagues – more mysterious, more mature, more unapproachable – and that had its own appeal,” Vogue boss Anna Wintour is quoted as saying in an obituary about Tatjana Patitz.
