Following her performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards, Madonna’s appearance has become the subject of critical debate. “Hardly recognizable” is one of the harmless comments. Now the singer expresses herself.
“Madonna kind of looks like this singer who sang Vogue and other songs,” writes a Twitter user after the 64-year-old’s Grammy performance, and many others agree. “Madonna needs to stop plastic surgery and embrace the aging process. She’s almost unrecognizable from this point on,” “Gosh, what has Madonna done to herself? #GRAMMYs” or “Madonna looks ‘refreshed’ lol…”
Of course, the comments about Madonna’s round face – this phenomenon is also called “puffy face” – did not leave the singer untouched. Now taking to Instagram, she complained that some people would rather gossip about her face than talk about Kim Petras, the first trans person to win a Grammy.
“Rather than focus on what I said in my speech, which was about thanking artists like Sam and Kim for being fearless, a lot of people chose to just talk about close-ups of me. Taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort any face!’
“Once again, I’ve been targeted by ageism and misogyny,” said Madonna. Two phenomena that “pervade the world in which we live”. She went on to state that she will not apologize for any of her creative choices, nor for the way she looks or dresses.
Madonna advocates for women over the age of 45
The 64-year-old singer sees a major problem in the way women are perceived in midlife: “A world that refuses to celebrate women who are over 45 and feels the need to to be punished if they continue to be strong-willed, hard-working and adventurous”.
Madonna, who is known for controversial appearances and outfits, describes her strength with a Beyoncé quote: “You won’t break my soul” – “You won’t break my soul” and adds: “The world is made by my power and my Endurance threatened. By my intelligence and my will to survive. But they will never break me.”
Madonna plans to celebrate her 40th year in the music business with an upcoming world tour called The Celebration. The tour is scheduled to begin in North America in late July this year and will feature 35 performances.
