According to the specialized site The Hollywood Reporterthe manslaughter charge remains against both, but the Santa Fe district attorney has now struck out a firearm enhancement from a second charge, meaning a possible five-year prison sentence for Baldwin and Gutierrez- Reed is no longer valid.
If convicted on the manslaughter charge, the defendant couple faces a maximum of 18 months in prison.
Discussing the reason for the change in titles, the spokesperson for the First Attorney for the Judicial District of New Mexico, Heather Brewersaid (via THR): “To avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and special counsel have removed the firearms enhancement to the manslaughter charges in the death. by Halyna Hutchins on the film set of Rust.
“The prosecution’s priority is to ensure justice, not to ensure billable hours for lawyers in big cities.”
Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles, added that he “applauds the district attorney’s decision and it was the correct, ethical and substantive decision.”
