Poschner, whose contract in Linz was extended early until 2027, will take up this parallel position with the 2025/26 season. In the same year, Poschner’s position with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, which he has directed since 2015, ends. “I’m already looking forward to great moments together. I experience the cultural city of Basel as an exciting and vibrant place: artistic partnerships and synergies across institutional boundaries seem uncomplicated, obvious and very much a matter of course,” Poschner is quoted as saying in a press release from Basel. The 52-year-old, who has been working in Linz since 2017, is also a regular guest at the Zurich Opera House.
In Switzerland, Poschner will replace the 64-year-old Brit Ivor Bolton, who succeeded former BOL boss Dennis Russell Davies as Basel boss in 2016. All three conductors are under contract with the Viennese artists’ agency “Dr. Raab & Dr. Böhm”.
Poschner: “In all my previous encounters with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, I was impressed by the flexibility of the sound, the sense of drama and the enormous intensity that makes every performance unforgettable.”
