The 2012 ESC winner triumphed late on Saturday evening in the Swedish preliminary round for the international music competition, which Great Britain is hosting on behalf of Ukraine in May. Experts and betting shops had seen Loreen with her song “Tattoo” in advance as the big favorite for the preliminary round.

Internationally, betting shops already regarded Sweden as the most promising candidate for the ESC title – even before Loreen’s victory was even certain. Loreen was delighted. “I’m so happy that we in Sweden stand for everything I’ve presented here, something that inspires hope,” the 39-year-old told Swedish broadcaster SVT.

Sweden has won the ESC six times so far – only Ireland has done it again. The last Swedish winner was singer Måns Zelmerlöw with “Heroes” in Vienna in 2015. However, Sweden probably experienced its greatest moment in the competition almost 50 years ago: In 1974, the pop group Abba had won the Grand Prix in Brighton, England, with their contribution “Waterloo”. The success suddenly made Abba internationally known – a world career followed.

The women’s duo Teya & Salena will represent Austria in the second semi-final of the ESC. They try their luck with the song “Who the hell is Edgar?”.
