One of the long-standing traditions of the Oscar awards is for an acting winner to return the following year to present the award to the spinning wheel winner in their category the following year.
The Academy faced a dilemma this year, as the winner of the 2022 Lead Actor Award, Will Smithwas banned from the awards show for 10 years after the incident last year when he hit the presenter Chris Rock.
His solution: that the winner of the Best Actress of 2022, Jessica Chastainjoin the 2002 Best Actress winner, Halle Berrywhen the two present together the Oscars for Best Actor and Best Actress .
The statuettes were for brendan fraser by The Whale and michelle yeoh by Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Smith was banned by the Academy after he took the Oscars stage last year when Rock, presenting the Documentary Feature category, made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
After the incident, Smith returned to his seat. Later that night, he won Best Actor for his role in King Richard and gave a long acceptance speech.
This year’s Oscar host, Jimmy Kimmelhe joked about the hit in his opening monologue.
“If someone in this theater commits an act of violence at any time during the show,” he said, “they will be awarded the Best Actor Oscar and will be allowed to give a 19-minute speech.”
