Talk of a possible movie began shortly after the finale of monk, and the idea nearly came to fruition at least once before. Making an independent movie is more difficult to achieve financially for cable, but it makes business sense for a streaming platform that complements the existing catalog.

The series won a total of eight Primetime Emmy Awards and two SAG Awards. Shalhoub, who also served as an executive producer, was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for eight consecutive years (2003 to 2010), winning in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
